Things to Do in Agadir

Things to do in Agadir beyond the beach

Agadir is built around one of the best beaches in Morocco: ten kilometres of wide sand, a long promenade, and a sea that stays swimmable for most of the year. But the city and the countryside around it have more to offer than sunbathing. Here is a short, honest guide to the things worth your time, plus what we can take you out to do ourselves.

On the water

Jet ski on Agadir beach

The classic Agadir water activity, and the one with the shortest commitment: sessions start at 15 minutes and go up to an hour. You leave from the beach, ride with an instructor, and see the whole bay and the city skyline from the water. No licence needed. See jet ski prices in Agadir for the full list.

Surf and bodyboard

Agadir itself is better for swimming than surfing. For real waves, head north to Taghazout and its surrounding points, about twenty minutes by road, where surf schools rent boards and run lessons for all levels.

Inland: quads, buggies and the desert that is not far away

Most visitors do not realise that twenty to thirty minutes south of Agadir the landscape changes completely: argan forest, sand tracks, small farms and dunes running down to the Atlantic. That is where our quad biking and buggy tours run, from our base at Takkad out to the coast and back.

For anyone who wants to see the country rather than the city, this is usually the highlight of the trip. The circuit takes two hours — quad 400 DH, buggy 600 DH, hotel pickup included — and after the mint tea you can try the sandboard on the dunes if you want to.

On a camel

The gentlest way to see the beach and the countryside in one go: a two-hour camel ride that starts ten minutes from the centre of Agadir, follows the beach with the sea on one side and the mountains on the other, then turns inland along the Souss river and through a eucalyptus forest, past the royal palace, and back to the ranch for a mint tea. Camel riding in Agadir is 200 DH.

In the city

Agadir beach and promenade

The beach is clean, wide and patrolled, with cafes and restaurants along the promenade. It is busiest around sunset, when the whole city seems to walk there.

Agadir Oufella

The old kasbah on the hill above the city. The original fortress was destroyed in the 1960 earthquake, but the walls have been rebuilt and the view over the bay and the port is the best in Agadir, especially in late afternoon. Go up by taxi or on foot if you like a climb.

Souk El Had

The big market: spices, argan oil, leather, pottery, textiles, fruit and household goods, all under one roof and spilling into the surrounding streets. Go in the morning, expect to bargain, and keep an eye on your bag in the crowded alleys.

The marina

Boats, restaurants and a short waterfront walk. Good for an evening meal rather than a full day.

Day trips from Agadir

Paradise Valley

A palm-lined gorge in the mountains north of the city, with natural pools and small waterfalls, best visited in spring when the water is high. It is a popular excursion and worth going early to avoid the crowds.

Taghazout

Once a fishing village, now a relaxed surf town with cafes on the rocks. Easy half-day, especially combined with a surf lesson.

Crocoparc

A crocodile park north of Agadir, popular with families with younger children. An easy, shaded couple of hours.

Souss-Massa National Park

The coastal park south of Agadir is known for its birdlife, its dunes and its long empty beaches. You can drive there yourself, and it is a good half-day if you want the coast without the crowds.

How to plan your days

A simple pattern that works well: one morning on the water, one afternoon inland, one day trip north, and one slow day on the beach. That gives you the sea, the desert, the mountains and the city without spending your holiday in a minibus.
